I plainly recollect being painfully shy, as a youngster. I had no self-confidence at all. I recollect my dad telling me to find out something from a neighbour. This involved me having to knock on the neighbour’s door and trying to get my query out. I was dying inside. Unbelievable but true. You see part of the problem, maybe the whole of it, was that, right through my young life, no one had given me a clear message about how great I was or that I looked nice or that I was special. This is essential in order to overcome shyness and build self-confidence. I am not blaming my parents as they failed to do this due to a number of factors. They were in many ways victims of their individual childhood. I understand this. We were a poor family with nine of us living in a small apartment. My dad was a man of not many words who worked all day and used up the rest of the evening in the local getting drunk, often coming home and being verbally insulting to every person, but for the most part my mum. She did the best that she could but with six children, born in rapid sequence, and a weak mother to care for, she was pretty much weighed down with the responsibilities of life. Added to this she had very little support from my father in the every day running of the home. The effect of this being that she had not much left of herself to give anyone else. I am not mentioning this in order to obtain compassion from anyone but to illustrate the significance of building up self-confidence from the very start of a child’s life. You can do this by admiring your youngster at every occasion that you can. Acknowledge their achievements and make a fuss of them. Tell them repeatedly that they are looking good. Always make your child feel special and wanted. In this way, you will help your child to build self-confidence and overcome any shyness they may feel. Remember helping your chid in overcoming shyness and building confidence is one of the top gifts that you can give them.
