Do You Have Problems Falling Asleep?

By: S A B Streubel

If you are having trouble falling asleep or staying sound asleep all night, you are not without help. Most of us experience periods of wakefulness at some point in our lives due to fatigue and tension and a general overload of work. Just put; we force too much into each and every day.

Sleeping pills are the simplest therapy for wakefulness but not continually the best. This requires a call via your physician and a recommendation; thus adding additional stress to your already busy timetable.

Today, the developing tendency is to keep in touch and up to date about all and via everyone all the time through mobile phones, the internet, 24/7 television programming etc. Centuries ago peoples lives were ruled by the seasons -- thus less hassle and less restlessness!

In those days, whilst the sun went down, got dark, you just couldn't do anything that necessitated light so you went to sleep. By being able to look at television all night it is far too easy to stay up. Waking up becomes more intricate and you long for another hour or two in bed! How much rest is sufficient? What can modern study tell us about the mysteries of sleep? Can rest be replaced by resting on the chaise longue?

Virtually everyone, at some time or other, finds it tricky to fall asleep or to stay asleep through the whole night. The majority of us overcome these bouts of wakefulness and are capable to act normally again in a few of days. Regrettably, for others the problem can develop into severe restlessness. If this is you -- there is help!

There are different types of cures for restlessness. First, however, you must understand what sleep is and also that sleeplessness is not an sickness in itself (via few exceptions). External factors:-
a) External - like drinking too much coffee (caffine).
b) Mental - focusing on anything too much so as not to be capable to calm down.
First you have to realize what is causing the sleep blockage.

Slumber Cycles, recognized by advanced rest researchers, consist of several stages.

Stage 1: Light Slumber - The electrical action in the brain slows down and the muscles start to calm down. This typically lasts a few minutes and it is easy to arouse up.

Stage 2: Rapid Activity - The brain experiences rapid bursts of action.

Stage 3: Deep Sleep - The brain is experiencing slow wave action.

Stage 4: Deeper Rest - The brain shows further slowing down of brain activity.

Stage 5: REM (Rapid Eye Movement) Sleep - Dreaming Slumber - The body experiences rapid eye actions under closed eyelids, increased brain activity and deep muscle relaxation.

After Stage 5 sleep we gradually drift into a light rest again and the Rest Cycles repeat. One such Rest Cycle usually lasts about 90 minutes. It is quite difficult to awaken someone from a Deep Slumber and this Rest Cycle seems to be the single most key.

There seem to be inconsistent ideas on how much rest we actually need with the researchers coming to the conclusion that somewhere between 6 and 8 hours of sleep is normal; but there is quite a difference between individuals.

Also, when we change with age so do our requirements for sleep. So, the rule of thumb would seem to be that if you arouse up refreshed, you have had enough slumber! So have the remedies changed - some of the modern techniques incorporate headphones and rhythmic sounds to harmonize the brain waves. Older remedies include ancient mind relaxation techniques such as meditation and yoga. It is thought that you can induce some very typical electrical brain wave activity by meditating your mind into relaxation.
